View this scenario…

Your boss want to distribute an ISO document marked as AFREM Standard Operating Procedure (A-SOP). He need it fast. He summons you at 11am and want the system ready to be implemented and use by 3pm the same day. At noon (1pm until 2pm) you need to pick up your wife and kids from school… What do you do and what can you do in that very small time limit?

That’s what happen to me yesterday. Need to rush in and try to figure out things without incurs any additional budget or machine.

I have one computer lying around on my server room. This old computer is a Pentium 4 clone PC with 160 GB of hard disk and 1 GB of RAM. So… I load up my Fedora Core DVD and install it on the PC. Configure and tweak some setting on that Operating System to enable Apache, MySQL, PHP 5 and Zend Optimizer to be run well.

I also intalled eAccelerator on that Operating System to speed up my PHP services.

After all these setup and configuration finished. I shutdown the PC and put it on the equipment rack and link the power cable from our full fledged UPS backup system to it.

Powered it up again and login to the root (sudo root). So now the installation and configuration of the very simple but efficient web based file manager that’s run under php and apache. I use lynx to browse the Internet to search for XQTO website (www.xqto.com). Then I download the XQTOFileManager software to the linux server.

After unzip the download file, I edit the index.php file and adjust some configuration on it that reflect my need for a simple web based fime manager. Within minutes, I have a simple web based file manager up and running.

Before 3pm yesterday… I presented the system to my General Manager (Operation) and trained him a little. My GM praised me and thanks for the great job I’ve done… hahaha.. he never knew that it’s very easy to do it….. hahaha

That’s good to be a somewhat “expert” on Linux/Unix operating system while others never know what you’re doing. To look cool… never use any GUI on your Linux/Unix for configuration… go back to the basic… Use Lynx for web browsing, use VI for your text editing including developing your website…. hahaha

So… what do you think?… do you want to impress your boss?… hahaha
